Doublecheck yourself before you wreck yourself…

… Because giving your clients false hope through unverified information is bad for your health.

A few days ago I had been brainstorming around the name of our clients’ company. Our project group had found it blunt and unfitting, and after some time spent thinking about it I came up with a new name. After presenting it to my group we decided to pitch it to our client. We did, and they really liked it. I mean, hook, line and sinker-liked it. Their email reply was next to ecstatic, and they told us to immediately register the domain name.

Now here’s where the fun begins.

For some reason I had failed to check up the name availability properly, and had assured our client that the .se domain was available for registration. I mean, I checked it the previous weekend… or at least I think I did.

Note to self: Do not assume!

About five minutes after telling our clients in an email that the domain was aailable, we checked it once again, and what do you know… it’s freaking occupied, since who knows for how long, and a proper webpage is sitting right where we promised our clients theirs would be.

This is where the panic sets in, and we, after a brief discussion and a whole lot of cursing from yours truly, we realize we have to face the music, apologize to our client, and start thinking about what direction to go next. They like the name, but all the good domains are taken. What to do, what to do…

Anyways.

Lesson learned; Doublecheck and verify everything before getting your clients’ hopes up.
