Determined not to let the ticket I got issued last week ruin my vacation, I went to the courthouse Downtown on tuesday to give them a piece of my mind. We came there about an hour before closing time, and we were greeted by a line of about 300 people just waiting to get inside. By the time we got close to the door, about half an hour before closing time, the cops outside decided to not let any more people inside. Since we took the bus to get there, about an hour and a halfs ride, this of course was incredibly discouraging. However, they gave everyone who was still in line a permission slip to get ahead of the line if they appeared before 9.30 within 2 days. So, we had little choice but to turn around and come back the following morning.

Next day. We get up horribly early and get on the bus to Downtown again. We get ahead of the line as promised (well, there was another line of people who were supposed to get ahead of the line..) and we get inside. Well inside we meet a friendly Sheriff who had a look at my ticket and noticed that I was leaving the country shortly. He was kind enough to get me the court appointment the same day because of the circumstances, usually you have to wait several weeks for an appointment. He also told me that the LAPD constantly gives out these tickets since the city needs the money, and that many people just pay it without contest, just to not have to deal with the hassle of going to court…

I wasn’t going to give up that easily though, I was well prepared, determined to prove my innocence and had a ton of documents to back it up. A couple of hours later, it was time to appear in front of a judge.

I was sent to a hallway where I had to wait to be let inside the courtroom, along with maybe 200 other people. Well inside, an officer read us our rights and informed us on the court procedure. It wasn’t at all intimidating. Of course, my case was the third last case to be heard, so I had to sit for nearly 2 hours, just waiting. But it was both interesting and informative, since I got a good idea of what fines were given out for specific violations, under what circumstances they were reduced, etc.

One thing that was especially surprising, was how unprepared the rest of the people in court were before appearing before the judge. People didn’t bring their tickets, their ID:s, nothing, and everyone just seemed either defiant or just apathetic.

Something that on the other hand sadly wasn’t surprising at all, was the ethnic uniformity of the people charged. There was not a single white person in the building, except for the cops and the court employees. I mean, how the hell is it that even in this day and age, that people are so obviously discriminated? I’m glad the Sheriff I mentioned earlier was so polite and helpful. Because of that, I still can’t say that there aren’t any good cops…

Anyways, at long last it was my time to face the judge. It was a blonde woman in her late forties, with a sympathetic look, but she also gave the impression of it being her first day on the job, constantly asking her secretary questions and not being able to fully interpret the papers in front of her. She probably wasn’t used to traffic court. “Is this good or bad?”

She started by asking me the strangest question, she asked why I had presented “these documents” (passport, visa, drivers licence, proof of residence, flight ticket) to her. Well, since the charge was driving without a valid licence, I thought it was pretty obvious that I wanted to prove I had a valid license, and that the charges were total bullshit. She tried telling me that I needed to have a IDP (International Driving Permit) even though I didn’t. I was prepared for this, I had a stamped printout from the DMV with highlighted text clearly stating that wasn’t the case at all. I offered to show them to her, but then a funny thing happened.

I don’t remember what she said literally, but it was something similar to “I see that you have a lot of documents here, therefore I am going to dismiss all charges”. That’s just hillarious. I was totally unable to hide my smug sense of self-satisfaction, so I just said to her with a big smile “Thank you”, turned around and walked out as a free man.

Take THAT, ‘Muurrrka!!!

Last wednesday it happened again. The cops pulled us over when we were driving down Venice, just minding our business and not breaking any laws. It’s the fifth time it happens now and believe me when I say it’s got nothing to do with my driving. These cops kept us by the side of the road for over an hour, interrigating us about everything between heaven and earth, searching the car and acting rude as usual. This time I was prepared with all the documents they could possibly want from us, but seeing the opportunity to mess with foreigners who don’t know their way around, they told us both our documents and my drivers license were invalid. I got issued a ticket, for total bullshit, and I even have to appear in court! Even though I was not at fault and I had proof to back it up! But these ignorant fucks sent the car to the impound lot, again, and left us on Venice to figure out a way to get back home, again. No wonder people hate the LAPD. These incompetent, uncivilized, superior, condescending, patronizing, bloated pathetic losers with their “fuck you, obey me”-attitude make me sick to my stomach.

If I wasn’t leaving in a month, I would make a formal complaint, but now the time is too short, and I don’t want to spend my vacation dealing with this shit. I’ve already squared one of the 2 points I were supposed to get fined on, tomorrow I’m going to court to fight out the other part. Then I’ll just try to forget this ever happened. Well, at least until I get pulled over again…

This weekend was pretty damn sweet. On saturday me, Heidi, Sean and Maja went to Chinatown to visit Max in his new apartment in the brewery. The brewery itself is a pretty awesome concept, an old brewery that’s been made into living spaces. Max’s apartment was 3 stories of awesomeness. The crown jewel was a forklift (…) that he had inside of the apartment, he apparently got it for free from work. So of course we were playing around with it, lifting eachother up, swinging from ropes we tied to it, etc. We might have gotten a little carried away at the end though, someone luckily caught it on film:

In Russia, forklift operates you! Ok, jokes aside, he actually had a forklift and it was awesome, but we didn’t break anything. We spent the night at his place, and we had a nice hung over sunday together in Downtown and Little Tokyo, with lunch at Pete’s and dessert at Yogurtland.

Yesterday me and Sean were able to score some badges for the Electronic Entertainment Expo, E3. It’s an annual event where the biggest players of the gaming industry present the latest and greatest innovations and games. We saw some pretty cool new stuff, among other things the new XBOX Kinect technology, previously known as Project Natal, which involves some cool motion tracking features. I prefer playing with a mouse or a controller to jumping and waving like an idiot, but I suppose it can be cool for some types of games. The lines to try out of

The best thing about the Expo though was when we were just walking around randomly and heard a lot of noise coming from one of the stages. When we walk over there we see Method Man and Redman on stage, and they start to perform just as we get there! They were there to promote some Def Jam Singstar game or whatever. They played some of the old school Wu-Tang stuff, and it was fucking awesome.

The last week we’ve been pulled over twice for having faulty plates, the first time they even impounded the car. We got it back though. We also moved into our new apartment on friday, which was a mess in itself. We spent the entire day packing up our stuff, only to realize, when on our way to the new apartment, that we forgot to pick up the keys. With our entire life stashed in the U-haul and nowhere to put it, we had little choice but to stay at a hotel over the night. But now we are finally settled in at our new place in Playa Vista, and it’s great. 3 mins drive from work, 5 mins drive from the beach.

Another gig at work today, this time we got a visit from canadians Born Ruffians. Before this, I didn’t know much aboot (hehe) them, I had only heard one song which I kinda liked, but i forgot about it pretty quickly. But the show today was very intruiging, and I definately need to listen to them more. It was sort of a mix between Vampire Weekend and Band of Horses, with a wink towards Elvis, and it felt very contemporary. Food and beer was served as well, and I’ve got a nice afternoon buzz going on. Today is a good day.
